Carotid Doppler

A Carotid Doppler Ultrasound scan is primarily for assessing the blood flow in the arteries of the neck that supply’s blood to the brain.

Before the test:

It is necessary to remove any jewelry, scarves, coats, jumpers or any other object from around your neck, as these can be obstructive to the scan. It will help to save time if you can remove them before you enter the examination room.  Also in order for the technician to access your neck easily, a loose neck top is recommended.

During the test:

  1. You will be asked to remove any objects around your neck that may get in the way of the test.
  2. The technician will ask you to lay down on the bed and turn your head to one side.
  3. There will be cool gel applied to your neck to help the ultrasound sensor slide around easily, the technician will place the sensor against your skin.
  4. You may feel some gentle pressure while the test in being performed.

After the test:

Carotid testing should take 15-30 minutes, and there are no special precautions you’ll need to take following the test. Your doctor will discuss your test results with you at your next office visit.
